Plastic parts for lawn mowers and garden equipment

Starter handles, air filter covers, cowlings, discharge chutes, grass bag connectors, height-adjust levers and wheel hubs. Outdoor parts — UV stable, impact-resistant in the cold, and snap fits that survive being taken apart repeatedly.

Garden equipment parts share three failure modes: colour fades outdoors, snap fits break, and parts crack when dropped in the cold. All three are material and design questions rather than moulding pressure. UV stability comes from the resin and the masterbatch, low-temperature impact comes from the resin plus avoiding sharp internal corners, and snap-fit life comes from root radii and sensible interference.

This is a high-volume category for us, covering everything from engine cowlings to the handles and knobs at the operator end. Every photo below is a series part. If you have an existing part you want copied, send one over — we produce a drawing for your approval before cutting steel.

Outdoor parts fail in three ways, and none of them is about injection pressure. Colour fades, snap fits break, and parts crack when dropped in the cold. UV stability comes from the resin and the masterbatch — and from the colour itself: dark parts hold up far better in sun than pale ones, so if the colour is your choice, going dark saves a lot on the stabiliser package. Anything near petrol should avoid PC and ABS, which swell; use PA or POM there.

On colour matching: we get close, not identical, and it is better to say so up front. You send a reference part, we match against our chips, shoot the first sample for you to compare, then fix the masterbatch once you tell us which way to shift. For controlled colour the proper route is a Pantone reference or your colour plaque, held to a stated Delta E. Masterbatch itself varies slightly lot to lot even in the same resin — that is true across the industry, not just here.

Snap fits are usually moulded in one piece rather than assembled, because a latch that comes loose is a common field failure outdoors. Three rules make it work: a radius at the root, since a sharp corner is where the crack starts; enough cantilever length for the material to actually bend; and interference kept inside the elastic range. PP arms bend a long way but creep, PA is springy but moves with moisture, and POM suits anything opened repeatedly. If you only have a sample and no drawing, we scan it, rebuild the model with draft and radii, and send you the drawing to approve — a used sample carries wear and distortion, and cutting a tool straight off the scan copies those defects into every part.

Part types we actually run

Starter handles and recoil housing covers

Pulled hard, thousands of times — the radius at the rope exit decides whether the cord frays through

Air filter covers and carburettor covers

Latches that open and close by hand hundreds of times without going slack, on a sealing edge that actually touches

Cowlings, shrouds and engine covers

Large thin-wall area — sink and warp are settled by even cooling in the tool

Discharge chutes and mulching plugs

Scoured by grass and grit — wall thickness and inlet radii drive service life

Grass bag frames and bag connectors

Has to grip fabric without cutting it — every edge needs a radius

Throttle levers, choke levers and control knobs

Feel and travel come straight from tool dimensions — no slop allowed after assembly

Deck fittings, wheel hubs and height-adjust levers

Load-bearing — boss and bore walls need substance, with fillets at the roots

Trimmer bump heads and spool covers

Takes impact by design on bump feed — toughness matters more than strength

Filter discs and ventilation grilles

Dense grille work — the tool has to avoid thin steel or it wears out fast

Which material, and why

PA6 / PA66 — Best toughness and impact resistance — the first choice for handles, covers and loaded parts. It absorbs moisture and moves, so fits need allowance

PP — Weather-resistant, cheap and stress-crack resistant — common for large covers and bag frames, though weaker in stiffness and cold impact than PA

POM — Low friction and wear-resistant — height levers, slides and wheel-shaft interfaces

TPE — Grip overmoulding for slip resistance and vibration damping — shot onto a PA or PP substrate in a second pass

ABS — Cosmetic parts — good surface and easy colour matching, though it ages faster than PP or PA under long outdoor exposure
